Understanding HTMA

The Mineral Ratios Behind Chronic Inflammation

6 min read

It's rarely one mineral — it's the ratios. Why calcium-to-magnesium and sodium-to-potassium matter for pain, tension, and stress.

When people first see an HTMA report, the instinct is to hunt for the one mineral that's 'low' and supplement it. But minerals don't work alone — they work in relationships. Two people can have identical magnesium levels and very different symptoms, because what matters is how that magnesium behaves next to calcium, sodium, and potassium.

The calcium-to-magnesium ratio, for example, often reflects how much 'tension' the nervous system is carrying. A high ratio can line up with muscle tightness, difficulty winding down, and pain that lingers. The sodium-to-potassium ratio tends to mirror adrenal stress — the pattern behind feeling wired-and-tired, reactive, and run down all at once.

These ratios are also why 'just take magnesium' so often disappoints. If calcium is dominating the picture, adding magnesium alone may not shift the relationship your body is actually stuck in. The point isn't to chase numbers — it's to gently rebalance the terrain so the inflammation, tension, and stress patterns can settle.

Reading ratios in context — alongside your sleep, your stress, your food, and what you've already tried — is where the real work begins. That's the difference between supplementing a lab value and actually understanding what your body has been asking for.
